Abstract

This chapter describes the first stage of scale development – writing your preliminary scale. This first version will be longer than the final scale. Be prepared to produce more items than you really want to include in the final version. All the items should be as ‘good’ as you can make them at this stage, but some may have to be discarded because they do not meet all the necessary criteria.
