Abstract
This article studies of the rise and fall of the Bildungsroman genre in Victorian fiction, but does so with a particular focus on the kinds of fiction that replaced it in the later Victorian period. Bildungsroman fiction has had a strong influence on the way English is analysed in university settings, but such analysis hinders our appreciation of the distinct values of genre fiction.
