    Abstract

    This chapter explores what poverty is and how it may impact on young children's development. It explores the achievement gap between children from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers. it suggests that well trained practitioners can make a difference for children from disadvantaged backgrounds if they provide high quality learning environments and engage with parents and carers.
