Abstract

Ethical approval represents one of the essential elements in the process of developing a research project. Despite its importance, we argue that it is incomplete and that it should be an ongoing process, divided into different stages. We also suggest a set of ethical research approval criteria with accompanying strategies to guide research students, researchers, and the Ethical Research Committees of higher education institutions. Accordingly, the purpose of this policy statement piece is to redefine research ethics criteria and their strategies, to discuss three stages of the ethical approval process, and to provide relevant recommendations.
