The novella 'The Great God Pan' by Arthur Machen, published in 1890, is structured in a series of interlocking narrative modes. The techniques of the mystery novel are employed to reflect supranatural mysteries and Machen's involvement with the esoteric society the Order of the Golden Dawn.
