Abstract

The hardships being faced by victims of construction hazards in the industry question the level of compliance of building contractors with section 64 of the National Insurance Act (NIA 2003) and do not communicate any good news about the building industry in Nigeria. This study assessed the level of compliance of building contractors with the National Insurance Act (NIA 2003) with the objective of unveiling the real situation and attracting measures for compliance. It was achieved through the review of exiting literatures and the use of survey, which aimed at eliciting the compliance levels of Building contractors with the Act. 45 questionnaires were distributed and 35 of the questionnaires were returned and used for the analysis. The findings revealed a very low level of compliance of contractors with the Act, which is attributed to corruption and non-enforcement of the Act. The study concludes that enforcement of the Act is the key to its effective implementation and, therefore, recommends the passing of the enforcement of the Act into law and the inclusion of the mode of compensating workers at both insured and uninsured building construction in the Act.
