The operational management of water quality requires a methodology that can provide more precise information on cycles and trends in water quality than that afforded by either a simple classification or an extensive list of water quality determinand concentrations. The use of a water quality index can bridge the gap between these two extremes of water quality monitoring and reporting methods. The development of one such index which is based on the water quality standards set by the EC for a range of water uses, is outlined. The utility of this index in the classification of water quality is also fully demonstrated. -from Author
