Biography

 

Wendy is an Associate Principal Lecturer in Primary Education. Having undertaken a degree in Music, she has also completed a PGCE in Primary Education (7-11 year olds). In November 2015 Wendy became recognised as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

 

Before joining Leeds Trinity University Wendy worked in a variety of educational settings with a wide range of roles and responsibilities. She worked as a class teacher for 14 years in three different primary schools teaching across the primary age range. In the last school she also worked as Deputy Headteacher where she was in a leadership and management role for six years.  She then became a numeracy consultant for Education Bradford where she delivered mathematics training and support to teachers in Bradford primary schools.

 

Wendy joined Leeds Trinity University in 2003 where she has had a range of roles and responsibilities before her current position. She worked as an Early and Later Years Primary mathematics tutor, a Level 4 Professional Studies tutor: Creating Effective Learning Environments and Teaching and Learning in the Foundation Stage; Level 6 Practitioner Enquiry into Learning Teaching and Formative Assessment and the Year 1/Level 4 Early Years welfare tutor, which she continues to be responsible for. She has also led a Level 5 Forest School Club.

 

Research interests

 

Wendy has a specific interest and expertise in outdoor learning and she is a qualified Forest School OCN Level 3 Practitioner. Her research areas are outdoor learning and Forest Schools, Primary Mathematics Learning and Teaching, Student-led Enquiry and Early Years Education.

 

She can be consulted by external organisations and professionals on the following topic areas:

  • Outdoor learning

  • Forest Schools

 

Wendy is currently involved in a number of research and consultancy projects. These projects are:

 

  • Developing student self-assessment and target setting of mathematics subject knowledge as part of the PGCE/School Direct Stage 1 assignment, and tracking progress in Stage 1 SBT

  • Developing planning proforma to maximise good mathematics teaching

  • A Forest School/outdoor provision action research project linked to Ferre Laevers work on well-being and involvement

 

Teaching and Administration

 

Wendy teaches a variety of modules across a wide range of courses within the Primary Education Department. She teaches:

 

  • Level 4 Early Years Mathematics

  • Level 5 Experiential Learning in the Early Years Curriculum

  • Level 6 Developing Children’s Thinking within the context of Mathematical and Scientific Understanding

  • Level 6 Practitioner Enquiry into Learning, Teaching and Formative Assessment

  • PGCE School Direct (5-11) Mathematics

  • PGCE Primary (5-11) Mathematics

  • PGCE School Direct (3-7) Mathematics

  • PGCE Primary / School Direct Learning Outside the Classroom

  • EYTS Creating Engaging Environments

 

Wendy is also currently developing a course that will either run at Leeds Trinity University or at a partner organisation. This is a Leeds Trinity University Teaching and Learning Academy Project with CSPTSA (Catholic Schools Partnership Teaching School Alliance).
