Biography
Suzanne Owen received her PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Edinburgh in 2007, where she also received her undergraduate MA. She also completed a PGCE in Religious Education at Bath Spa. In 2008, her PhD thesis was published as The Appropriation of Native American Spirituality (Continuum - now Bloomsbury Academic). She continues to research issues of indigeneity in Newfoundland as well as contemporary forms of British Druidry.
She was Co-Chair of the Indigenous Religious Traditions Group at the American Academy of Religion (2009-2015) and has been the Coordinating Editor of the Journal of the British Association for the Study of Religions (JBASR) since 2012. In 2021, she became secretary of the British Association for the Study of Religions.
Research interests
Indigeneity and the category ‘indigenous religion’; contemporary Native North American and First Nations traditions; representation and memory of the Beothuk in Newfoundland; contemporary paganism and shamanism; appropriation and inculturation; religious/cultural boundaries; methodological and theoretical issues in the study of religion, including the critical study of 'religion' and related categories ('spirituality' and 'sacred').
