Biography

Philip McDonald has an undergraduate background in Sport Rehabilitation and Sport Science and undertook postgraduate study into the relationship between exercise and health.  His studies at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham led to his appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and subsequently a Lecturer in the Sociology of Sport. 

He has worked in a number of high performance sport settings.  He was part of the establishment of the UK Athletics High Performance Centre for Endurance (HIPAC) at St. Mary’s and provided support to several of the UK’s best endurance runners.  He was employed as a Sports Massage Therapist for PACE Sports Management, a sports management and marketing company for some of the biggest names in the world of sport.  He has worked in inter county Gaelic Games providing Strength and Conditioning support and injury prevention support for the London Senior G.A.A. team.

Philip is a member of both the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA, Associate Member) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA, Professional Member) and holds British Weightlifting coaching awards (QCF).

A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he joined Leeds Trinity University in 2007 after a period spent lecturing at the University of Cumbria.  Since then he has contributed to teaching across all Sport, Health and Nutrition programmes.  Currently he leads modules in Strength and Conditioning, the Sociology of Sport, Sports Journalism and co-ordinates final year undergraduate Dissertations.

Research interests

Philip's main research focus relates to the sociology of sport and in particular the role of sport in the construction and maintenance of identity among the Irish diaspora.​​​
