Biography
Dr. Nick Mitchell is an experienced Senior Lecturer in Computer Science with a distinguished career spanning over 20 years. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the field of software engineering and education, with a special focus on Agile methodologies and the development of innovative teaching practices in computer science.
Nick earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Essex, solidifying his deep knowledge and academic approach to problem-solving. While completing his thesis he began a career as a software engineer in the aerospace industry, where his expertise contributed to various high-profile projects. These combined experiences sparked his enduring passion for technology and research, and laid the foundation for a move to higher education. As an academic, Nick has maintained his enthusiasm for real-world software development, a highlight being his contribution of code to a NASA mission and participation in a sounding rocket launch.
Nick has now taught in universities for over two decades. His teaching career has been marked by his role as a programme leader, supervisor of research, and personal tutor, helping shape the next generation of computer scientists. Nick is renowned for his ability to engage and inspire students, which is reflected in the various awards he has received for excellence in teaching.
In his previous role, Nick was instrumental in developing curriculum, mentoring colleagues, and fostering a vibrant learning environment. At the end of 2024 he began a new phase of his career as a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Trinity University, where he continues to focus on software development, as well as the integration of Agile principles into both industry and academia.
A certified Scrum Master, Nick is a strong advocate for Agile software development. His research interests include and the intersection of software engineering practices and educational strategies, particularly in the context of computing. He has published several papers on these topics and remains actively involved in ongoing research projects, continually refining his skills as both a teacher and a practitioner.
Nick's commitment to both education and the practical aspects of software development keeps him at the forefront of his field, constantly evolving and contributing to the advancement of technology.
