Julie Allen has a PhD in the nature and effects of belief bias in reasoning from the University of Plymouth .    Julie lectured at Plymouth University while completing her PhD and has also tutored in Psychology at the Open University and at various other institutions including the WEA.  She has  advised examination boards on curriculum content and design and  was a member of the  Project  2012 Working Group  (Inspirational Teaching). She joined Leeds Trinity in 1987 and has taught psychology modules at all undergraduate levels and the Psychology of Communication at postgraduate level for students of MA Public Communication . Her research interests focus on bias in thinking and decision making, risk-taking and health, critical thinking, and students’ academic skills.

In 2014 Julie was awarded a joint  Leeds Trinity University Learning and Teaching Award to investigate factors influencing optimum student use of the VLE (Moodle) and currently holds a joint Leeds Trinity Learning and Teaching Award, examining  anonymous marking.


Julie is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research interests

In particular I am interested in researching so called “cognitive deficits”, cognitive style and various psychological factors which underpin risk taking, reasoning, problem solving and decision-making. 


These broad areas  of interest are focussed into two research areas


Applied Cognitive Psychology.

(i)           Examining the psychological factors underpinning risk taking and decision making in individuals with life threatening food allergies.  Currently the principal researcher, working with collegues at Leeds Trinity and Liverpool John Moore's University on a project investigating student experiences living with life threatening allergies.

 Student Learning

(i)                 Exploring how psychology students think critically about psychological research,

(ii)               Investigating the links between paranormal belief and different approaches to critical thinking in students.

(iii)             The organisation of material and optimal use of a VLE
