Personal profile
Biography
Ian's initial career was in the retail trade where he commenced as an assistant and four years later, following successive promotions through retail management, was appointed senior buyer. This career provided Ian with sales skills, negotiation ability and commercial acumen.
After a number of years in buying Ian chose to commence a new career in education, initially teaching in a further education in a poor inner city area delivering both further and higher education programmes. After six months Ian became a Programme Learning Manager responsible for a wide range of curriculum areas. From here, Ian was head-hunted to lead a rapid expansion of work-based learning curriculum for a University in West Yorkshire before moving on to Bangor University where he led a substantial change management programme for the University's Lifelong Learning Department, engaged in a number of European Social Fund projects with EU partners and contributed to a Welsh Assembly Government programme to change public and voluntary sector service delivery across Wales.
On returning to Yorkshire, Ian worked for a short time at Leeds Trinity University driving cross institutional employability developments before working initially for West Yorkshire Lifelong Learning Network and then establishing, developing strategy for and leading the subsequent partnership (HEART) of Universities and Colleges in West Yorkshire where substantial progress was made in respect of collaborative working on both Local Enterprise Partnership initiatiave relating to economic growth and social inclusion/widening participation for under-represented groups in university level study with particular success in regard of Care Leavers.
Ian is essentially a 'generalist' in respect of business, managament and leadership but tends to shy away from accountancy/finance!
