Biography

Helen is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology. She is a Fellow of Advance HE and a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society.

Helen was awarded a BSc Sport and Exercise Science from Aberystwyth University in 2011, and a MSc Sport and Exercise Science from Leeds Beckett University in 2012. For her masters degree she was awarded the departmental prize for outstanding academic achievement and The British Psychological Society dissertation award. Following this, Helen undertook a Sport Psychology PhD in the Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University which she completed in 2018.

Helen has previously worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Leeds Beckett University, and a Course Leader in Sports Coaching Science at UCFB, Manchester. In addition, she has experience of delivering applied sport psychology workshops to multiple audiences including The Cabinet Office, students, athletes, and businesses. She also has experiences of engaging in industry projects and has worked on funded projects with organisations such as EPIC Risk Management to evaluate their Problem Gambling Awareness and Prevention programme in multiple settings (i.e., secondary schools, EFL and SFL football clubs). 

Research interests

Helen’s primary area of research focuses on the formation and consequences of interpersonal expectancies. Whilst researching in this area she has worked with numerous stakeholders including high performance athletes, coaches, parents, students, and lecturers. Helen also has a passion for conducting research aimed to enhance student and lecturer experiences when operating in Higher Education settings. Helen has published research in reputable peer-reviewed journals and has disseminated the findings of her research at national and international conferences. Helen has experience in both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, however her main expertise lie within the qualitive research methodology. Helen has served as a peer reviewer for numerous academic journals. 

Teaching and Administration

Helen has over ten years of experience of teaching within Higher Education. During this time, she has been module leader on numerous Sport and Exercise Psychology modules, Research Methods modules, and Employability and Academic Skills focused modules. Helen has experience of course leadership, personal tutoring, and has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects.
