Biography

Hammed Afolabi is the Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance programme at Leeds Trinity University (LTU), UK. He holds a PhD in Accounting and Financial Management from Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK (via the Henley Business School full PhD scholarship award), an MSc in Forensic Audit and Accounting (Distinction) from the University of South Wales (UK), and a BSc in Accounting from Ekiti State University (Nigeria). His PhD thesis focuses on sustanability reporting standardisation, including harmonisation and diversity issues, as well as relevant policy matters and their practical implications for policy makers, preparers, and other users.

Hammed is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Forensic Accountant (CFA), Certified Practising Accountant (CPA, Australia), and Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is also a member of the European Accounting Association (EAA), and the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA). Additionally, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Academic Practice and Learning in Higher Education and is a Senior Fellow of the Advance HE (SFHEA). 

Prior to joining LTU in 2023, he worked at Henley Business School, University of Reading (UK), where he taught and delivered different modules, including International Financial Reporting, Corporate Reporting, Advanced Financial Reporting, and Management Accounting. Hammed previous work experience also includes working as an accountant and forensic auditor in Nigeria and UK (he is still consulting in forensic accounting sphere).

 

Research interests

Hammed has a strong interest in applied and impactful research. His research focuses on accountability, corporate reporting, social and environmental accounting, sustainability accounting, and extinction accounting approached from a critically interdisciplinary standpoint. He is particularly drawn to robust, context-rich qualitative methodologies anchored in critical discourse analysis, critical theory, and epistemological inquiry to interrogate the role of global reporting frameworks, governance structures, and stakeholder power dynamics in shaping sustainability narratives, institutional practices, and regulatory legitimacy. Within this focus, he has published in leading international peer-reviewed journals and contributed to several internationally published books. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary projects that bridge social science research with policy-relevant outcomes.

Additionally, he serves as an active ad hoc reviewer for a range of international journals, including Accounting in Europe, Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal (SAMPJ), Review of Accounting and Finance, Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility, and the International Journal of Emerging Markets. Hammed is open to collaborations in relevant research areas and is also welcoming potential PhD candidates who are interested in these areas with strong qualitative backgrounds.

2023- Co-investigator on Research Collaboration and Impact Fund (formerly REKEC) University of Reading funded project “Exploring connectivity between climate change disclosures and financial reporting, (£14,610), with Associate Professor Ronita Ram of Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK (01/11/2023-01/10/2024).
