Biography

Hammed Afolabi is a lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Leeds Trinity University (LTU), UK. He holds a PhD in Accounting and Financial Management from Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK (via the Henley Business School full PhD scholarship award), an MSc in Forensic Audit and Accounting (Distinction) from the University of South Wales (UK), and a BSc in Accounting from Ekiti State University (Nigeria). His PhD thesis focuses on sustanability reporting standardisation, including harmonisation and diversity issues, as well as relevant policy matters and their practical implications for policy makers, preparers, and other users.

Hammed is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Forensic Accountant (CFA), and Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is also a member of the European Accounting Association (EAA), and the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA). Additionally, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and Learning in Higher Education and is a Fellow of the Advance HE (formerly, Higher Education Academy), UK. 

Prior to joining LTU in 2023, he worked as an associate lecturer at Henley Business School, University of Reading (UK), where he taught and delivered different modules, including International Financial Reporting, Corporate Reporting, Advanced Financial Reporting, and Management Accounting. Hammed previous work experience also includes working as an accountant and forensic auditor in Nigeria and UK (he is still consulting in forensic accounting sphere).

 

Research interests

Hammed research resonates around accountability, corporate reporting, social and environmental accounting, sustainability accounting, extinction accounting, and forensic accounting, approached from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. He is particularly interested in qualitative and contextual approaches for understanding and exploring various intricacies bothering the contemporary accounting arena. Within this area of focus, he has published in leading international peer-reviewed academic journals, such as the Journal of Applied Accounting Research and the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal, and contributed to different international books. Furthermore, he is an active ad hoc reviewer for different international academic journals such as, the International Journal of Emerging Markets, Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal, and Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility Journal etc. Hammed is open to collaborations in relevant research areas and is also welcoming potential PhD candidates who are interested in these areas.

2023-: Co-Investigator on Research England (administered by the University of Reading) funded project "Exploring connectivity issues between sustainability related information and financial statements" (£14,360), with Associate Professor Ronita Ram (01/11/2023-01/10/2024).
