The Centre for Addiction Recovery Research (CARR) is a global first – a university-based research centre created exclusively to promote and champion research into addiction recovery and related areas such as desistance from offending.
The aim of CARR will be to champion innovative research projects and programmes to build the evidence base around recovery and specifically around the use of recovery capital as the method of measuring recovery wellbeing and growth. Our aim is to create a substantial evidence base around what works and for whom in addiction recovery and to apply the evidence across areas of education, policy and practice to improve the lives and outcomes of people affected by substance and process addictions.
We will also aim to build a parallel body of research evidence around ‘affected others’ – the families, friends and colleagues of people with addiction issues and to create positive networks of research and evidence for measuring family recovery capital and applying it.
Our mission is to be the global leader and hub for recovery capital research and its application and more generally to lead innovative research and application across community and criminal justice settings. We will use principles of co-creation and co-production to ensure that inclusion and capacity building are a central focus of our work. Ultimately our aim is both to increase the number of people who achieve recovery and fulfil their life potential, and also to improve family and community life through the implementation of evidence-based recovery innovations.
