What if Law Schools were actually about (social) justice?

Activity: Invited talk/public lecture/debate

Description

This paper offers a provocation to help us think about how Law Schools could be different. It takes as its starting point that Law Schools as spaces and law degrees as programmes have, whatever we might say, little to do with social justice. It briefly offers a challenge to the idea that Law Schools and what they do inherently make the world a better place. It then goes on to consider what a Law School rooted in social justice might look like, what and how it might teach, how students might learn and how academics might work. In doing so it acknowledges the neoliberal marketized world we operate in and therefore tries to offer an alternative way of thinking about what we do and how we do it within that current context. It considers strategies of resistance and hope because (with apologies to Walt Disney) ‘if we can dream it, we can be it’.
