‘The Passionate, Political Friendships of Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf and Margaret Llewelyn Davies’

Activity: Invited talk/public lecture/debate

Description

On 19 July 2023 VWSGB members heard an enlivening and fascinating talk by Marielle O’Neill about Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf and Margaret Llewelyn Davies, followed by a Q&A with Mark Hussey.
Marielle explored the complex relationships between Virginia and Leonard Woolf and Margaret Llewelyn Davies. The trio had great influence on one another both personally and politically. However, there were tensions within Margaret and Virginia's friendship, particularly regarding Virginia's novel, Night and Day (1919) – Margaret possibly inspired the character of Mary Datchet – and Woolf's introductory letter to Life as We Have Known It (1931).
