Description

This is a project for a book series with Springer, for whom the series editors are Professor Ron Barnett (UCL Institute of Education; Professor Paul Gibbs (Middlesex University), and Amanda Fulford (Leeds Trinity University). The series presents books that individually and collectively help to develop a philosophical literature about higher education. Higher education is a huge matter globally, commanding massive resources, political decisions and the hopes of many. Yet, there is little to accompany the debates about higher education in the way of an informed philosophical literature. This series fills the gap in the literature. Wide in scope, it includes work that engages with the idea of the university in the twenty-first century as well as topics concerned with the student experience. The volumes examine policy and practical issues, including internationalisation, access and equity, and the digital era, as well as more overtly conceptual issues, such as academic freedom, ethics and wellbeing. Each volume addresses a specific matter, is informed by contemporary debates in philosophy and social theory, and takes the shape of a debate. As a whole, the series addresses and brings out the nature both of the university as an institution and higher education as an educational process.

A second strand of this project is a conference, for which Amanda Fulford is one of the 4 convenors and conference organisers, to be held at Aarhus University, Copenhagen, in November 2017. The conference will play an important role in the joint international endeavour of developing and strengthening the discussions about the purpose and role of the university as an institution. The conference will, therefore, be central to the formation of an initiative to establish a lasting joint international academic venture into the philosophy of higher education.
