Biography

Prior to returning to university, I spent five years as a police officer in the Durban City Police (1992-1998) and ten years as a prison officer in HM Prison Service (2000-2010).  I completed my PhD in philosophy at the University of York in 2014 and was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2016.  I have held academic positions at the University of York, University of Leeds, and University of Hull.

Research interests

My doctoral research on the relationships among aesthetic, ethical, and cognitive value in literary representation was published as a monograph entitled The Value of Literature in 2016.  I am currently writing my second monograph, Narrative Justice, which argues for the significance of stories in reducing ideologically-motivated crime.  My specialisations are narrative representation, crimes against humanity, and terrorism.

Teaching and Administration

I am Lecturer in Criminology and coordinate the Criminology, Criminology and Sociology, Criminology with Policing Studies, and Sociology with Policing Studies programmes.  I am a member of the Society of Evidence Based Policing, the N8 Policing Research Partnership, the Society for Applied Philosophy, and the British Society of Criminology.
