Biography

Dr Martin Barwood has 10 years of research experience in the area of Environmental Physiology, Sports Performance and Health and over a 100 published journal articles, abstracts and industry reports. His work has included examining the efficacy of ergogenic aids, the health consequence of over-exposure to extreme environments, human performance in cold-water and human adaptation to heat and cold. He has presented at National and International conferences and makes frequent research contributions to the fields of Health and Sports Performance. 

At Leeds Trinity, Dr Barwood’s primary research focus will be the effect of the exercise environment on markers of health and on interventions to improve exercise adherence in at risk (unhealthy) populations. He has recently undertaken training in non-invasive brain stimulation at Harvard University and is looking to extend his research experience of these techniques.

Dr Barwood has secured significant research income from grants, charities and from industry and has worked on recent funded projects from the European Regional Development Fund, the European Hydration Institute, Professional Game Match Officials LtD, UKSport, W.L Gore and Associates, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Scottish Sea Farms and Survival One.

Dr Barwood’s personal interests include endurance training, running, cycling and kayaking. With his professional knowledge and expertise he has helped athletes prepare for Olympic games, Marathon des Sables, rowing the Atlantic, and the North Pole Marathon. He is happy to consult and support athletes in the pursuit of their goals.

Dr Barwood is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the Royal Statistical Society and is an affiliate member of the Physiological Society.
