Biography

Prof. Kirsteen Kim researches and teaches theology from the perspective of mission and world Christianity, drawing on her experience of Christianity in South Korea, India and the West, and with a special interest in theology of the Holy Spirit. She was appointed Professor of Theology and World Christianity at Leeds Trinity in 2011.

Prof. Kim publishes widely and is the author of Mission in the Spirit (ISPCK 2003),The Holy Spirit in the World (Orbis/SPCK 2007), Joining in with the Spirit (Epworth 2009, SCM 2012), co-author of Christianity as a World Religion (Continuum 2008/Bloomsbury 2016), A History of Korean Christianity (Cambridge 2015). She has edited several other volumes, including The New Evangelization (Bloomsbury 2015).

Prof. Kim's work is inspired particularly by living in other countries - South Korea (1987-1992), USA (1992-1993) and India (1993-1997) - and by extensive international travel and engagement with different Christian communities. She specialises in expressions of theology and theological issues in Asia. In view of the fact that Christianity is a world religion with varied local expressions, she is working toward internationalising theology.

She is a graduate of the University of Bristol (BSc 1981; PGCE 1982), Fuller Theological Seminary, USA (MA 1996), and the University of Birmingham (PhD 2002). She has taught theology in higher education since 1993 and is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Other institutions in which she has worked include Union Biblical Seminary, India, the Cambridge Theological Federation, the Selly Oak Colleges and the University of Birmingham. She also supervises at PhD level.

Prof. Kim is the editor of Mission Studies, journal of the International Association for Mission Studies and of its supplement series, also published by Brill (Leiden), Theology and Mission in World Christianity. Between 2007 and 2013 she served as Vice-moderator of the World Council of Churches’ Commission for World Mission and Evangelism and chaired the drafting group for the new statement, Together Towards LifeIn 2009-2011 she was Research Coordinator for Edinburgh 2010, a worldwide and multi-confessional project on Christian mission based at the University of Edinburgh. It resulted in the Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series, of which she is series editor.
