Biography

With an academic background in modern foreign languages and theology, I have retained this commitment to interdisciplinarity in my professional life in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and teaching and conducting research on education in multi-ethnic and divided societies. I seek to make my teaching within Education Studies and Working With Children, Young People and Families, research-informed, inclusive and adaptable to the interests, needs and backgrounds of my students.

Research interests

My research interests lie in the area of diversity and inclusion of ethnic minority learners at all stages in education. Always qualitative and ethnographic in nature, my previous research has looked at citizenship education in divided societies such as Northern Ireland and Israel, racial integration and educational attainment in South Africa, and children's understandings of their ethnic identity through the use of creative visual methods in schools in England and South Africa. I am currently involved in research that focuses on the experience of Black and Minority Ethnic students at university, and the approaches to inclusive practice held by UK-trained teachers from Mainland China and Hong Kong.
